Becoming a Merit Badge Counselor

Step 1. Pick a merit badge

View the list of current Merit Badges and pick the ones you would like to help with.

All Merit Badges A-Z

Step 2. Complete the required training.

Complete the 4 short MBC training modules available in My Scouting Training Center.

  • Advancement (SCO 471)
  • Aims and Methods of Scouts BSA (SCO 472)
  • Introduction to Merit Badges (SCO 474)
  • What is a Merit Badge Counselor? (SCO 486)

Complete the Safeguarding Youth Training.

Step 3. Apply

  • Complete the MBC Application Form.
  • Complete the online Adult Volunteer Application.
  • Once all the requirements are completed, email a copy of the MBC application form and a screenshot of the completed MBC training modules (make sure your name at the top is visible) found in MyLearning to:

Completing Merit Badge Counselor Training Modules

All merit badge counselors must complete a series of online training modules that can be accessed through their My Scouting account.

  • Login to your My Scouting account
  • Click on My Training
  • Click on Scouts BSA
  • Click on Catalog and Search Merit Badge Counselor
  • Complete the 4 modules

Note that you must complete both the online process and submit the form & confirmation before you can be approved onto the Goose Creek District MBC roster.

Notes:

  1. it may ask you if you want to “transfer” or “continue” – click on “continue” so it doesn’t muck up your unit registration.
  2. be sure if prompted to indicate that you’re applying for position code 42, merit badge counselor
